Frequently Asked Questions About Gate Maglocks
The questions below cover what buyers most commonly ask before selecting an outdoor gate magnetic lock. If your question is not covered here, our team is available by phone Monday through Friday.
Can a gate maglock be used with a gate operator such as a LiftMaster or Viking?
Yes, but it requires a kit that provides dry contact outputs. The FPC-7329 kit includes a push-to-exit button with NO, NC, and COM terminals, which can be wired into the auxiliary input of most gate operators to trigger lock release as part of the gate's open cycle. The Wireless remote kit in the FPC-5194 functions as a standalone remote-release system instead.
What type of gate frame is needed to install an outdoor gate magnetic lock?
Gate maglocks require a metal mounting surface on both the gate frame and the gate itself for the lock body and strike plate to seat correctly. Steel tube frame gates are the most common installation surface. Aluminum frame gates can work depending on the wall thickness. Wood gates present a challenge because the structural movement of wood over time can affect alignment. Bracket hardware is typically required to position the lock body correctly relative to the strike plate on the gate leaf.
What is the difference between the NO and NC outputs on a gate maglock exit button?
NO stands for Normally Open and NC stands for Normally Closed. These refer to the default state of the circuit at the output terminal when the button is not being pressed. A Normally Open circuit completes only when the button is activated. A Normally Closed circuit is complete by default and opens when the button is activated. Access control panels and gate operators differ in which input type they require, so having both outputs available on the FPC-7329 exit button allows it to connect to either type of system without additional hardware.
How is a gate maglock powered?
Gate maglocks require a DC power supply, typically 12V. The FPC-7329 kit includes a 2 amp power supply as part of the kit. The FPC-5194 kit includes an additional power supply for convenience when installing the wireless receiver. The power supply should be installed in a protected indoor enclosure whenever possible to prevent weather exposure to the electrical components.
Can an outdoor gate maglock be installed on a gate that is already wired for an intercom?
In most cases, yes. If the intercom system has a relay output or dry contact output that can be triggered when access is granted, that output can be wired to release the gate maglock. The FPC-7329 kit is the better option for this type of integration because its exit button provides NO, NC, and COM terminals that can interface with the intercom relay. The specific wiring method depends on the intercom model and its output configuration.
